Going Down Memory Lane in a Yellow Elevator

What a treasure I found under my parent’s bed in the middle of July, somewhere around 1974, a Barbie townhouse complete with a canary yellow elevator escalating all the way to the third floor penthouse suite; I was only searching for an old shoebox full of odds and ends- but scored big with the sighting of an early Christmas gift.

I have never really understood early Christmas shopping, myself. It seems I never get into the spirit (or come into the funds) until the last few shopping days of the year. But my parents, being seasoned veterans of Christmas shopping, had tucked this baby away to be opened on Christmas Day and not a moment before.

The cat was definitely out of the bag as I came dragging the whole kit and kaboodle out to proudly display in front of my parents. Let’s just say, my father did not quite share my enthusiasm for the early surprise. It seems I had to wait another dreaded five months before I could open the box, assemble the townhouse, and play Barbies with my best friend, Tina Martin.

A few days ago I came across a Barbie Townhouse, just like the one in my mind’s eye, for sell on ebay and the memories of that warm summer day; with nothing better to do than hunt for a shoebox full of buttons, came flooding back to me.

Eden, of course, has her own Barbie townhouse, this one we managed to keep as a surprise, it was easy- since I think the big box rolled in from JcPenny just in the nick of time on December 23rd. It is bigger and nicer than the 70s Barbie townhouse that I recall- there is just one thing missing- a bright tweety bird yellow elevator soaring to the penthouse suite. Now that was “far out”!

  1. I just posted about the Barbie Town House and linked back to your blog! You would love my story, I think!

  2. SWEET! I had this same Barbie Townhouse, but it was a birthday surprise waiting for me when I got home from school. I loved the funky kitchen chairs and that ELEVATOR WAS THE BEST! Thanks for the memories! 😀
